News & Updates

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to the Psychologists Perth - Henshaw Consulting Website.

AS SEEN ON TV!  West TV - "Undercurrent"

"The Psychology of Prisoners" - 24th Septempber 2011

West TV conducted an interview with me this week about the psychological effect of imprisonment on prisoners and whether rehabilitation could be better achieved by other means. It will be showing on West TV at 7.30pm on Saturday night and again on Sunday night at 10pm.  It will also be repeated twice during the following week.  I will post the YouTube link here when I have it.

AS SEEN ON TV!  Channel 7 - "Today Tonight"

"Dole Dynasties" - 23rd Septempber 2011

Back on "Today Tonight" this time reprising a discussion about long-term unemployment.  Channel 7 did quite a good job today in managing to avoid stigmatising the long-term unemployment as much as they usually do in their "Dole Bludger" type stories. The reality is that it is psychologically debilitating and unemployment's victims suffer constant loss of self-esteem and discrimination in the workforce.  To see this story, click here:

AS SEEN ON TV!  Channel 7 - "Today Tonight"

"Rats in The Working Ranks" - 7th September 2011

Back on TV tonight discussing what motivates Worker's Comp fraudsters.  Be sure to be watching Channel 7 at 6.30pm.  In my interview I argue there are two types of fraudsters: the straight-out con man (charming, handsome, intelligent and very persuasive but manipulative with his own agenda) and those who use
"cognitive dissonance" to deny or minimise that they're doing anything wrong.  Cognitive dissonance is where you hold two contradictory views about something, but choose only the favourable one to believe in and deny or repress the other.  For example, smokers do this - they continue to smoke whilst denying the negative impact of smoking to themselves.  If you miss it, you can catch the video here:

23rd August 2011 - West Australian Article on Emotional Eating

Online West Australian Article Here

The article in today's West Australian by Leah Fogliani discusses emotional eating - what it is, why it develops and what are the remedies.  In her interview with me, I told her that sometimes food is used as a substitute nourishment for a deeper, emotional craving.  Often something is missing in the person's life such as a loving relationship, meaningful work or creative expression.  Food can soothe the anxiety that comes with the unconscious realisation that something is missing in the person's life.  Unfortunately, it also has unwanted consequences in the form of excess weight that can serve to exacerbate suffering.  Emotional eaters need to address their issues with the help of an experienced and compassionate professional.

AS SEEN ON TV!  Channel 7 - "Today Tonight"

"Dole Street Dead End" - 17th August 2011

Today I had the great privilege of appearing on Channel 7's "Today Tonight" offering an expert opinion about the long-term mental health effects of unemployment.  Having conducted my doctoral thesis on this very subject, I found that the low self-esteem developed during unemployment persisted well into subsequent re-employment in ways that are predictable, though not immediately obvious.  There is a very large body of research into this subject, most notably dating from the Great Depression of the 1930's.  Unfortunately, only about 20 seconds of my 15 minute interview is shown so my views are somewhat skewed. In reality, Channel 7 missed the complexity inherent in the experience of unemployment and sadly it ended up being just another "dole-bludger" story, a la Tony Abbott, circa 1998.  Click on this link to see the video on the:

4th May 2011 - Gay Issues:  92.9FM Radio Interview with Lisa, Baz and Sam

Back on the radio this morning, this time discussing issues raised in "Insight" on SBS last night to do with whether or not it is safe for teenagers to come out if they're gay.  Generally speaking there's a lot of tolerance now compared with 10 or more years ago, though young people coming out need to consider their psychological safety in doing so.  Unfortunately, bullying is still rife in some schools, which can make life unbearable for young teens.  If in doubt, consult a professional and get lots of support before coming out to your school:

9th February 2011 - Hills Fires:  92.9FM Radio Interview with Lisa, Baz and Sam

Very early this morning Brock Walter, the Breakfast Show producer from 92.9FM contacted me and asked me to appear on the radio in 20 minutes!  He wanted me to talk to Lisa, Baz and Sam about the off-duty cop who had been using the angle grinder that had been thought to start the fires.  He was missing on Tuesday when police wanted to interview and charge him and they wanted my opinion on what might be his state of mind and whether there was any concern for his safety with regards to suicidal impulses.  I said:

25th January - Radio Interview With Lisa, Baz and Sam - Again!

This morning I had the great privelege of chatting to the morning crew once again - this time about the emotional dangers of reconnecting with long lost siblings, as Oprah did recently when she found a sister, Patricia, that she never knew she had.  The greatest risk, as I see it, is that many of us entertain the idea of a "perfect" sibling who understands us, is attuned to us, "gets" us and the disillusionment that can occur when we come face to face with the real person who turns out to be as flawed and complex as everyone else!

Mindfulness Therapy

dvd---mindfulness-175

Mindfulness is a state of relaxed and alert attention on the present moment.  It involves focusing just on what’s happening now. Deep mindfulness is an altered state of consciousness in which everything slows right down, allowing a heightened awareness of the present moment.  Mindfulness is the most important skill you need to access deep into the unconscious mind so as to transform and release the emotional pain that's been holding you hostage for years.  It's the next step in freeing yourself from depression.  To maximise your learning, the following formats are available:

1.  Mindfulness Video Presentation (MP4) - a full 50 minute therapy session, with all the education and informational content you get in a genuine, one-on-one session with me

2.  Mindfulness Audio Therapy Session (MP3) - same information as the video format, but in audio so you can replay it over and over again on your iPod or in your car

3.  Mindfulness Session - for you to have an actual, embodied experience of mindfulness.  You can use this over and over again, independently of the other material

4.  BONUS Mindfulness FAQ Audio Therapy Session - Answers the questions you may have after experiencing the Mindfulness Therapy Session

5.  Mindfulness Reading Material - All the basic information in a PDF format to augment your learning and if you prefer to read, rather than watch or listen to your educational material
