4. What if My Therapist Doesn't Understand My Problem or Me?

You may have the perception that your problem is too difficult for anyone but perhaps a rare therapist to handle, or perhaps you feel that you are too difficult yourself. This is actually a common perception that needn't interfere at all with the effectiveness of therapy. In our experience the main impediment to successful therapy is a lack of motivation to engage with the process on the part of the client.

I guarantee to understand you because my policy is to be 100% present and attentive to you for the whole of your session – therefore I won't miss any of your emotional nuances or how you make sense of your world. It is this focused attention as well as years of personal and professional experience that ensures that I have the insight to be able to understand all of my clients. In rare circumstances I may not be able to treat a client if their issue falls outside of my areas of expertise. I will let you know straight away if this is the case and refer to an appropriate therapist. Alternatively in rare circumstances it may be that you and I just don't "click". If this is the case I will let you know as soon as possible and refer you to another therapist.
