To help you see it more clearly, think about your family of origin – what difference would it have made to you if your parents had undertaken 2 years of therapy to sort out their issues before you were born? So you see, the benefit is inter-generational. If you are willing to make a commitment to yourself, you are saying "the buck stops here" and you are taking the responsibility to stop passing it onto your children and the next generation after that.
As for being effective, the scientific literature has consistently shown over decades that therapy is beneficial. There are many reasons why this is so which we are happy to discuss with you during your sessions. How effective your therapy will be has very little to do with your perception of how difficult you or your problems are to treat. The training involved in becoming a Clinical Psychologist (in my case, 9 years full time study plus years of ongoing training and practise) is so intense for a reason – it's because we are trained in how to identify and treat a huge range of emotional difficulties – effectively.
The only thing you need to bring with you in order for your therapy to work is the motivation to seek help, show up to your weekly sessions and put in your best effort to engage with the process. If you are not motivated to do so, this will show up in our assessment results and we will let you know; therefore you can make an informed choice about whether or not therapy is right for you at this particular time.
