In life, we’re all faced with certain threatening events; for example, not being able to pay the mortgage, relationship breakups or extreme work stress. During these times we can often feel as though something catastrophic is happening and as if we’ll never survive through it.
Let me tell you about anxiety and why you struggle to cope with daily situations. Firstly, subjective levels of anxiety can be measured on a 0-10 scale, with 0 being no anxiety at all and 10 being the maximum amount of anxiety you can experience. An anxiety level of 5/10 and above represents a high stress situation and an anxiety level of 7/10 represents overwhelm.
Beating jetlag is all about your food clock versus your body clock. If you can reset your body clock, you can beat jetlag. The food clock regulates sleep. In humans this function is largely dormant, but it’s still there in the hypothalamus, a small but important regulatory area deep in the core of the brain.
Light triggers wakefulness. In 2002, scientists found the specific cells in the eye that cause wakefulness. We can now use this discovery to trick the body into feeling more alert. There is a relationship between certain cells in the eye and our body clocks. Receptor cells at the back of the eye control sleep patterns. Retina cells contain a pigment that reacts to daylight. They send signals to the brain that regulate melatonin production.
