David Bonser
I was born in Western Australia and spent the first 9 years of my life living in Fremantle and Geraldton. After this time my family travelled for a number of years and I spent time living in the USA and Canada, and travelling across a number of other countries and destinations. I had a fairly physically active childhood, I learned to surf at the age of 10, and still try to get out into the waves when I can, and played many sports – a combination of being raised in a country culture, being born into a sporty family, and being the new kid fitting into new schools! I also had a passion for music, both playing it and listening to it, which also continues to this day. My family eventually returned to WA and I finished high school in Fremantle.
I began studying to be a graphic artist – although I didn’t complete my studies as I realised it just wasn’t working out for me - plus my life had become pretty stressful at this time. I sought out the guidance of a counsellor who, through our discussions, opened up the possibility of studying psychology.
I began my psychology studies in 1991 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in psychology in 1995. In 1996 I received an Australian Postgraduate Award and began an applied psychology Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology) degree. Whilst studying I gained registration as a Psychologist and worked providing therapy, support and psychological assistance for individuals, families and organisations. I gained experience in working with problems associated with developmental disabilities and autism; in schools and children with learning problems; and the impact of trauma and grief. Furthermore I assisted people with personal issues such as couple distress, breakdown and recovery; overcoming anxiety and depression; improving psychological health and wellbeing; and moving on from alcohol and substance use problems. In 2001 I went into partnership and helped set up a consulting company providing training and performance management solutions to other companies.
In 2004 I was awarded a PhD (Psychology) from Murdoch University and the use of the specialist title of Clinical Psychologist from the Psychologists Board of WA. I am also a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS). I have been a member of a support group, as well as facilitating several more - and found both experiences to be life changing! I am also fortunate to have the input of some fantastic friends and colleagues who work in the psychology/healing/support services field with a myriad of valuable perspectives and approaches. Furthermore my own personal and professional development is always ongoing through reading, supervision, therapy, workshops and training. All of these experiences have enriched the way I work with clients as I help people along their paths and through their own personal development. I look forward to being of assistance to you soon.
